Suzet: King of the Crêpes

News: Suzet is no more! It has been replaced by a ubiquitous Udon Noodle Bar :-(

A perennial favourite of ours is this crêperie in the bustling heart of Barcelona. I have been there so many times now I have lost count; it’s always a great place to take visiting friends and a well-situated starting point for a night of exploration.

Suzet is on Carrer Tallers which links the Ramblas with Ronda de Sant Antoni. It get’s pretty busy round there, so I recommend you book in advance to avoid losing out to a group of wandering tourists.*

From the menu you can order from a fantastic range of crêpes (’galletas’) or salads. Much fun can be had reading the names: ‘Chic End’ is a savoury pancake with chicken; ‘popeye’ is of course a spinach-based affair.

All the fillings I have tried have been delicious, and range from simple cheese and ham, to a whopping “complet” featuring a beefburger, all the trimmings and a pile of frites. I especially recommend the one that comes with a sweet curry sauce, but the name escapes me … anyway, you’ll find it!

Suzets business cardI should mention the décor. Towards the front of the restaurant the tables are quite long so small groups often share. In the tables are placed grooves containing metal strips that lifts up to reveal fluorescent lights which illuminate the tabletops. One side of the restaurant is completely covered with a semi-reflictive glass panel with embedded L.E.D. panels blinking messages to diners. It sounds freaky, but it’s actually pretty cool.

P.S. we love tourists!
