La Vinateria del Call

This venue was the inspiration for the Living Barcelona website! We happened upon this place once by taking a meandering route through the tiny passegeways of the barri gòtic, and having gorged ourselves on tapas, wine and cooked meats, could never find it again. Digging through the pockets of my jeans I found their card, and decided it would be a good idea to start making a note of the places we have visited for future reference - hence Living Barcelona.

Above all, La Vinateria del Call is a place to drink wine, the food being an accompaniment . That said, the food is pleantiful, delicious and inexpensive making it a great place to go for dinner. If, as I am, you are partial to a nice glass of wine (or three) you won’t be disappointed: the wine list spans 10 pages and the prices from 10 to 100 Euros.

The food consists mainly of tapas. There are a few surtits, which are large plates with an assortment of either meats or cheeses. The surtit d’embotits (platter of cooked and cured meats) costs only 10 Euros and easily packs enough protein for two; remember to ask for some pa amb tomaquet (bread with tomato).

Also recommended are the tapas of tigres (stuffed mussels) and girgoles (mushrooms).

Getting there can be a bit tricky, so have a look at the map and follow these instructions:

  • Coming from the cathedral, walk towards the road narrow passageway to the right of the cathedral: the one with the small incline on the approach near the sculptuered letters that say “BARCINO”.
  • You should now be walking down Carrer Ample. Amuse yourself with the irony that this means “wide road”, while listening to the classical-music buskers.
  • Despite the map, do not be tempted to turn right until you reach Plaça St. Jaume.
  • Once in the square turn immediately right toward the chinese restaurant on carrer Del Call.
  • Take the next road on the right after the square - sort of doubling back on yourself. This should be Carrer Sant Doménec del Call. The restaurant is about 30-50m up on the left-hand side.
  • You have arrived! Enjoy the food!

UPDATE!
We love Barcelona says …

Try the jamones y cecinas, the cheeses, the escalibada or the leeks with tuna.
Call ahead for a reservation, as they tend to fill up, especially on weekends.
